School-based Apprenticeships and Traineeships

School-based apprenticeships and traineeships (SATs) allow senior students (typically in Years 10, 11 or 12) to earn a wage, train towards a nationally recognised qualification and study towards their Queensland Certificate of Education at the same time.

A school-based apprenticeship combines structured training with real work and will provide a trade qualification at Certificate Level III or above. Most apprenticeships comprise of four stages and will take around four years to complete successfully when employed full time. Training occurs both on and off the job with some form of institutionalised training with a Supervised Registered Training Organisation (SRTO) such as TAFE or a private training provider. Not dissimilar to an apprenticeship, a traineeship also combines structured training with real work, allowing students to earn while they learn by undertaking a structured course of industry-based training. However, a traineeship generally only lasts for one year and in the majority of cases, training can be completed fully on the job with the assitance of an SRTO.

At Roma State College, your school-based Apprentice/Trainee Coordinator is:

Mrs Melinda Auld

Senior Campus

Head of Department - VET

External Certificate Courses

Senior students may enrol in Certificate II, III, or IV level programs at various Institutes of TAFE or other providers. There are 1 and 2 year courses which start at the beginning of Year 11—with some 1 year courses available in Year 12. The student's timetable may be adjusted to 5 subjects to help them complete their study obligations.

To enrol in any qualification, students will need to have a valid USI. Enrolment in a qualification is not the same as enrolling in a 'typical' school subject - please see the Head of Department - VET regarding enrolment cut off dates and requirements of your chosen qualification, including any forms or online applications that must be completed.

The purpose of this program is to increase employment prospects for students by providing them with learning in real world contects, enriching cultural knowledge and connecting to the community.

VET in Schools (VETiS) Funding

VETiS funded qualifications are delivered by Registered Training Organisations who have been approved by the department. Schools, in consultation with students and their parents, are able to choose any approved organisation to deliver the eligible qualification.

Students undertaking VETiS and looking to access VETiS funding, can complete one employment stream qualification at the certificate I or II level. Students who wish to access the VET investment budget to undertake a certificate III qualification should do so through a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship (SAT)—funding for a SAT is available under the User Choice program.

Work Experience

Work experience is available for students in Years 10–12 as a one-week block at the end of each term, after all assessment has been completed. It allows students to test personal vocational preferences through performing tasks in a workplace setting. Students select placements according to their future occupational aspirations that will ideally assist them in making informed decisions about their intended career path.

Students wanting to take part in work experience should see the HOD - VET to obtain a work experience pack. This pack will include a copy of all relevant dates pertaining to work experience requests that term, and include an expression of interest form containing the work experience provider's information and details of the placement. Once this expression of interest has been received by the school, an agreement will be collated and the school will conduct a risk assessment, with both documents needing to be signed by all parties before the work experience can begin.
