STEM

STEM, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, touches almost every aspect of our lives and the Department of Education is strengthening STEM education in Queensland State Schools to better equip young Queenslanders to contribute to this changing world.

Roma State College is the host site for the Queensland Virtual STEM Academy in the Darling Downs and South West region (QVSA-DDSW). The QVSA is a State schooling initiative which delivers courses to expand and enhance STEM opportunities for highly capable students in grades 5-9 through enriching and challenging courses. The learning is aligned to, and enriches the Australian curriculum, but does not replace the delivery of ACARA by school's teachers.

Classes are delivered through an innovative, real time online learning platform during school hours from schools across the region. Through this platform, rural, remote and regional state school students can harness the power of like minded collaboration and deep learning that highly capable STEM students seek.

Our Mission

Inspiring a passion and aspiration for STEM through innovative learning, enriching opportunities and transformational partnerships.

Our Promise

Enrichment and challenge. Opportunity and equity.

Homework Club is run to provide an opportunity for students to complete their homework in a supervised environment with staff assistance, if required.  It focusses on reading for enjoyment and the experience of shared reading to increase students' oral language skills, listening skills and comprehension skills.   Numeracy activities are added as students' progress through their primary schooling. Please contact your relevant campus for more information on how to get your student included in Homework Club.

QMEA

The Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA) is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Queensland Resources Council (QRC) which provides a talented pipeline of employees into the resource sector and other supporting science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) industries. Originally established in 2005, the QMEA has experienced significant growth over the years and now currently engages 90+ schools across the State.

With local industry support, the QMEA team provides genuine opportunities for school-industry engagement through an extensive range of programs designed to broaden knowledge of the resource sector and provide pathways for young people into related careers. Through participation in these programs, students are encouraged to enhance problem-solving and decision making capabilities through real life scenarios and they are given the opportunity to develop teamwork skills in a supportive and positive environment. Students interested in taking advantage of these opportunities should seek information from Miss Monique Jones at the Senior Campus.

UQ Young Achievers Program

The UQ Young Achievers Program supports the university aspirations, career options and community-mindedness of nominated Queensland state high school students by engaging and mentoring them throughout their academic journey and beyond. The focus of the program is to nurture and develop participants through mentoring, advice, financial assistance and opportunities for personal growth. Since its establishment in 2009, over 1236 students from state high schools across Queensland have participated in the program. Students selected for the UQ Young Achievers Program benefit from the ongoing support from current UQ students, on-campus experiences including residential camps at UQ St Lucia, personalised assistance and advice with study and career planning, opportunities for leadership development, tailored transition advice and invitations to UQ Open Days and other university events.

School principals can nominate Year 10 students who are motivated young people with the demonstrated potential to succeed at university. To be considered for the program, students must be ATAR eligible and consistently demonstrate a high level of commitment to their studies. For more information on the UQ Young Achievers Program, or where to find the full eligibility criteria, students should seek their Year Level Coordinator at the Senior Campus.
