South West 14-15 Rugby League - Cairns

South West 14-15 Rugby League – Cairns
From 4th to 7th May, several Roma State College students represented the South West Region at the 14-15 Years Rugby League State Championships in Cairns. The team, captained by Damon Qualischefski, also included Torey Kirby, Blayze Blake, Grayson Walsh, Keenan Ryan and Adam Hodgson. Overall, the players toiled hard throughout the 4 days of play and had earnt a well-deserved rest following the carnival.
Day 1 was a tough initiation to Rugby League at state level as South West played Metropolitan East. The first half was played at a speed and intensity at which not a lot of the South West contingent had experienced before. After a tough first half, Met East led 30-0. The South West side responded well after the break posting 3 tries during spirited second half. However, Met East ran out winders to finish with a score of 58-16. Man of the match was Coby Fechner (St John’s) and Player’s Player was Shaun Packer (St John’s).
On Day 2 South West came up against the highly fancied Northern region. In what was another tough contest, the South West side fatigued late in each half handing their opposition a 44-6 victory. Man of the Match was Grayson Walsh (RSC) and Player’s Player was Ryan Kehl (St John’s).
The South West side were pitched against arch rivals Darling Downs on Day 3 in what began as solid encounter. Unfortunately, due to ineffective 1 on 1 tackles across the park, DD shot out to a 30-0 lead at Half Time. Like the 2 previous days, South West played a lot more controlled and enthusiastic brand of football in the second stanza with each team scoring twice. The end score in the local derby was Darling Downs 42 – South West 8. Man of the match was Ryan Kehl (St John’s) and Player’s Player was Damon Qualischefski (RSC).
Day 4 proved a mountain too hard to climb as the South West side were battered and bruised mentally and physically from encounters against sides that finished 5th (Northern), 6th (Met East) and 10th (Darling Downs). Although South West scored 4 tries to 3 in the match, conversion kicker Grayson Walsh couldn’t buy a goal as the match ended in a 16 all draw. Man of the Match was Damon Qualischefski (RSC) and Player’s Player was Torey Kirby (RSC).
A huge thanks to all of the parents that made the long trip north for your efforts across the 4-5 days. Also, thanks to Mal McMillan who assisted the team as the trainer throughout the duration of the carnival.
