South West 14-15 & 16-18 Year Rugby League Trials

The South West 14-15 and 16-18 Years Rugby League Trials were held on Monday 27th March at the Roma State College Middle Campus Ovals. The groundsmen ensured that the fields were in peak condition for what is traditionally a fantastic day of Rugby League. Over the course of the day the U/15 side participated in 2 x 30 minute matches against Chinchilla SHS and St John’s. In warm conditions and with limited substitutes, the players battled on with the group left with no other option than to ‘tough it out.’ Several players put in big performances and were rewarded with South West selection. Congratulations to Adam Hodgson, Grayson Walsh, Keenan Ryan, Torey Kirby, Damon Qualischefski and Blayze Blake.
The 16-18 South West Trials also doubled as the 3rd Round of the GIO Trophy, a new state wide concept comprised of 80+ second tier schools. In the match of the day, Roma State College battled cross-town rivals, St John’s, for the right to host the South West regional final to be held in Term 2. The home team crossed early through their skipper and right centre, Will Beitz. However, through poor discipline, RSC gave away far too many penalties to find themselves defending their line for what felt like most of the half. The two sides went to half time with Roma State College holding onto a 6-0 lead. Defensively the State College side were like a Navy wall as they repelled set after set through sheer desire and desperation.
The second half was all one way traffic as Roma State College broke the line at will. The extra defence clearly didn’t seem to bother the home side as the starting pack of Jye, Johnson, Harvey Wright, Bennett Ladbrook, Caleb Westbrook and Zac Giddins who laid the platform for the outside backs to terrorise their opposite numbers. Tom Eddie lead the side around well and his decision making at the line was impeccable. Will Beitz was in the action again as he made several line breaks, setting up his ever improving wing partner Matt Rogers with a run-away try before repeating the effort for Tom Eddie. Geordie Ladbrook was also strong out of dummy half while Maverick Fisher was dangerous at the back. Along with this, the efforts of left centre Jackson Nicholls could not go unnoticed as he was defensively strong all game. Roma State College eventually ran out winners 28-0. Congratulations to Tom Eddie, Will Beitz, Jye Johnson, Harvey Wright, Bennett Ladbrook and Geordie Ladbrook on their selection in the regional side which will contest the state championships at Wynnum in May.
Thank you to the referees who assisted on the day: Boomer Kennedy, Shane Ferry, Taine Duff, Tom Moore, Grant Bignell and Mark Shields. Also, the efforts of Geoff Preston, Mal McMillan, Craig Nebe, Ross Vickers and the P&C staff cannot be ignored. Thanks for your assistance in setting up/packing up and running the canteen.
