In 2009 at Roma State College, the Key Learning Area of Languages other than English, was replaced by Inter-Cultural Investigations. This subject, being undertaken by students in Years 6, 7 and 8, compares aspects of culture, such as food, housing and celebrations between Australia, France and other countries of the students’ choice.
A small amount of French vocabulary is taught as part of the investigation but a larger element of English is included. The assessment task includes ICT components and is undertaken in English. It often involves the study of an element of society such as being a teenager, education around the world and sport, between Australia and another country of choice and then making a comparison between the countries.
This change to the curriculum was approved at the Parents’ and Citizens’ meeting held on 12 August, 2008.
